Shaw, Katherine E.

Beloved Friend,

Angel and ?Mommy?

Born August 25, 1917. Lifetime Saint Paul resident Katherine Snyder Shaw, age 90, passed away December 16, 2007, following a short illness. Dozens of her many friends were at her side over the past few days and she was an interesting and charming companion to the end. She attended Ramsey Elementary and University High, graduating in 1935. She held an Associate of Arts degree from Cottey College, Nevada, Missouri, and received her first Bachelor?s degree from Macalester College in Social Work and Psychology. During World War II, she served almost three years in the Women?s Army Corps (WAC) and was an active member of the WAC Veterans group throughout her life. Following the War, she returned to Saint Paul and attended the University of Minnesota on the GI Bill, completing a degree in Home Economics. She worked for many years for the Minneapolis Girl Scouts as Field Director and Director of Camp Greenwood, near Buffalo, Minnesota. For over 13 years, Kay was Day Camp Coordinator for the Camp Fire Girls and subsequently served as a Volunteer for both East and West Residences. After her retirement, Kay increased her volunteering schedule and was often seen at Presbyterian Homes in Arden Hills and Episcopal Homes of Saint Paul. She was assigned to set up the new gift shop at Presbyterian Homes in Roseville; the gift shop thrives to this day and Kay remained an active volunteer there until the past few years. She was a Girl Scout herself, and was a Girl Scout leader for many years. She was also a member of Eastern Star, AAUW, and joined the PEO Sisterhood at age 18 and was active continuously until her death, serving in every office in her Chapter, and as President of the PEO Saint Paul Reciprocity Bureau, as well as doing a number of services at the state level. She served as an officer of the WAC veterans, was on numerous committees and often coordinated meetings and get-togethers, and attended the Holiday luncheon just 1 week before her death. In 2005, she sold her family home at 100 Cambridge Street Saint Paul, where she had lived all her life, and moved to an assisted living facility, where she once again volunteered her services and was in charge of the quarterly welcoming teas and also visited patients in the nursing care section. She was beloved by hundreds of her WAC Veteran, AAUW and PEO friends, was known for her heavily meringued Angel Pie, her feisty little dogs and her twinkling eyes. All who met Kay found themselves taken under her wing and suddenly involved in one of her activities. She often said she made friends because otherwise she would have been a ?lonely only? child. Her friends know better. Kay?s outgoing spirit attracted people to her, and once her friend, one was her friend for life. She was preceded in death by her parents, Vee Katherine (Morrison) Snyder and Fred Alton Snyder. Visitation Thursday 11 AM ? 12 noon at BRADSHAW 678 South Snelling Avenue at Eleanor. Graveside Service 12:30 P.M. at Acacia Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Presbyterian Homes-Roseville. A memorial service will be held in the spring. A notice of time and location will be announced prior to the service.
