Kjeld Md

d. January 2, 2015

Kjeld Oddvar Husebye, 89, of North Oaks, Minnesota, passed peacefully at home, on January 2nd, 2015, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Born in Oslo, Norway to Captain Gunnar & Helga Husebye on August 11, 1925, he immigrated to America in 1952.

Kjeld is survived by wife and soulmate of nearly 60 years, Karen, children David (Robyn, children Ashley and Kyle), Steven (Nancy, children Jessica and Lars), Elizabeth Hartmann (children Daniel and Julia), and sister Sonja Haug.
Of highest importance to Kjeld was his family, that they have the opportunity to enjoy the beauties of life around us. He emphasized proper human ethics and compassion as integral to one's daily life. Kjeld loved the outdoors, especially cross-country skiing in winter, and sailing and hiking during warmer seasons with family and friends.

Kjeld earned his medical degree from the University of Oslo in 1951, was a Fellow in Internal Medicine at Mayo in Rochester, 1952-55, and earned a Master's of Science from the University of Minnesota in 1955. He was in private practice in Internal Medicine from 1955 until his retirement in 1987.

Kjeld was a member of the American Society for Thoracic Diseases, the Ramsey County Medical Society, The Minnesota Medical Association, and the American Medical Association. He was a Fellow of the Minnesota Society of Internal Medicine, the American College of Physicians, the American College of Chest Physicians, and was board certified by the Educational Council for Foreign Medical Graduates and the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1960.

He was Chief of Staff at Miller Hospital during the merger of Miller and St. Luke's Hospitals in 1971-72, and a President of the Saint Paul Society of Internal Medicine, as well as of the Minnesota Society of Internal Medicine. He served as Clinical Instructor in the Department of Medicine at the Medical College of the University of Minnesota beginning in 1956, was promoted to Full Clinical Professor in 1975, and continued in that capacity until he retired.

In his younger years, Kjeld served with the Norwegian Underground Movement under the British Secret Service during WWII, and at the end of the war, with the Norwegian Armed Forces.

Kjeld and Karen's heart-felt thanks goes out to all staff and friends at Waverly Gardens for their ongoing support, especially these past few months. A special thanks, also, to the many skilled colleagues who have treated him over the years.
