Larry Michael Holweger, age 73, passed away on July 8, 2022 at home in Woodbury, MN. Beloved husband, father, grandfather, he will be missed deeply by his family and his many friends. Larry was born in Grand Forks, ND to Alice Sabe Holweger and Frederick W. Holweger. He is survived by his wife, Toni Diane Holweger (Chappell); son, Stuart (Toni Rae) Holweger; Stuart’s mother, Laura Davenport; granddaughters, Brooke and Abigail Holweger; his children by marriage, Stefanie and Ryan Chappell; and his devoted companion of 16 years, Bailey Holweger (18 lb. Cockapoo); his siblings, Lorraine (Les) Hochhalter, Beverly Johnson, and Melody (Randy) Robbins; sister-in-law, Charlotte Holweger; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Calvin Holweger; brother-in-law, Van Johnson.
Larry attended Pleasant View (grades 1-4), Emerado (grades 5-8) and Larimore HS. His first love was the family farm and he spent his early years in 4H and FFA. He attended NDSU and became a Bison for life. At NDSU he majored in business and joined SAE fraternity. Years later he would become an active member of the NDSU Development Foundation, join Team Makers and attend as many Bison games as possible (including multiple championships in Frisco, TX).
After graduating NDSU he became a trainee for St. Paul Insurance and worked his way up the claim department, leaving after 27 years. After a long and distinguished career, Larry retired in 2015 as Sr. VP Claims at CUNA Mutual. While in Madison, Larry served on the Board of Gilda’s Club Madison and was a volunteer for a domestic abuse shelter. Over the years, and at different companies, people who worked with him regularly said he was instrumental in their career and their development - he was a great mentor and leader. Larry’s work life started very early on the farm and later in life he would often take his vacation week and go back to the farm for harvest season. He also loved to read (pretty much anything) and travel with close friends.
Larry and Toni were married September 12, 1998, overlooking beautiful Lake Tahoe, CA. Family was paramount in his life and he loved spending time with them. He had a generous spirit and was happiest when he was working on a project for someone else. Larry loved spending winters at their home near Palm Springs, taking long walks and visiting with friends and neighbors, but especially playing with their dogs.
There was a small gathering of family and close friends prior to cremation. The service will be graveside on Saturday, August 27th at 11:30, Pleasant View Cemetery, 2800 11th Ave NE, Emerado ND (adjacent to the Holweger farm land).
