Leon Thurmes, age 83 of Stillwater, passed away on September 3rd. He enjoyed growing dahlias, landscaping and his large collection of farm art at his home overlooking the St. Croix River. He was born on April 6th 1933 in Hampton, MN to parents Lena and John and raised in Fairfax, MN. He graduated from St. John's University in 1955 and served as a medic in the army at the time of the Korean War. He married Sharon (Mickey) McGarvey of Pekin, Ill on May 21st, 1960 and after a brief stay in La Grange, Ill. moved the family to Stillwater in 1962. After a 14 year career at 3M he became owner and proprietor of Formerly Finneman's Antique & Furniture in Willernie, MN (1974). Over 3 decades of buying and selling furniture throughout the metro area yielded many adventures for he and surviving children Linda J. Perkins (Dale) of Astoria, Or, David H. (Shelly) of Thornton, CO and Daniel L. (Ann Marie) of Oak Park Heights, MN. Formerly Finneman's closed the doors in 2007 and a brief but happy retirement ensued. Leon is also survived by brother John A. (Theresa) of North St. Paul and sister Rosie O'Donovan of Shoreview along with grandchildren Courtney, Nicole, Tyler and Alexa.
