Nelson, Mabel M.

Mabel loved a parade.

Born 1/28/21 in Osseo, Minnesota with smallpox, "Baby Girl Lindquist" survived and thrived for 89 years. In her early years she helped work the family farm, played football with the boys, softball shortstop with the girl's team, and tuba in the marching band, reading every book in the school library by the time she graduated. She won first prize at the State Fair for the 4H steer she raised.

With help from her sisters, she graduated from the U of M in Public Health Nursing, interned in Duluth and later worked at General Hospital before settling into a career as a School Nurse for the Minneapolis Public Schools. Her years at Roosevelt High School helped some of her children earn their diplomas, and she finished her career at Dowling School, walking up to ten miles a day along the corridors to care for the students with physical disabilities that attended there.

Daughter, sister, nurse, wife, tolerant mother and friend, Mabel made all of us want to be better people. Strongly opinionated but not judgmental, she took time for the little things: birds, flowers, clouds, time to play with the children, time to read a good book. Alcoholics Anonymous was a huge part of her life with her husband, Paul.

Travel, new friends, and gardening filled her retirement years. She was always ready for an adventure and lent a willing hand to Meals on Wheels, COAM, Healthy Seniors, and the numerous projects of her children and grandchildren. She was an extraordinary recycle artist and loved collecting materials for her next project. Her biting quick wit surprised many, but never crossed the line to cause hurt feelings.

Back of Mabel Nelson's folder:

Preceded in death by parents, Emma and Aaron; loving husband, Paul; two brothers and four sisters, she is survived by her children, Glenn, Kathy, Susie and Robert and their spouses, Geri VanUden, Abdulla Albinali, Mark Perry and Kate O'Brien, as well as 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. A host of friends and neighbors will surely miss her wit and quiet wisdom.
