Mabeth Louise Saure Gyllstrom, 82, died September 22, 2018. Services will be Friday, September 28, 1:00 p.m., at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 4100 Lyndale Ave. So., Minneapolis, MN, with visitation one hour prior. The Revs. Ben Cieslik and Sarah Breckenridge will be officiating. A graveside memorial service will be held Saturday, September 29, 1:00 p.m., at Oak Grove Cemetery, Fergus Falls, MN. Reception to follow at 2:00 p.m. at PioneerCare Center, Fergus Falls.
Mabeth was born September 20, 1936 in Fergus Falls, MN to Samuel and Lillian (Evavold) Saure. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church. She received her Bachelor of Music from Augsburg College and was a soloist in the Augsburg Choir under Leland B. Sateren; her Master of Music from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL; and her Doctorate in Music from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
She married Richard Gyllstrom June 26, 1971. Her professional career began teaching voice at Millikin University in Decatur, IL. She went on to teach voice in the Music Department at St. Cloud State University from 1968 to 1998. She was named an Augsburg College Distinguished Alumna in 1978.
Mabeth was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in St. Cloud, where she co-founded the children's Choir School and directed the Senior Choir. After retiring in 1998, she and Richard moved to Ottertail Lake, where she was actively involved at Zion Lutheran Church of Amor. She directed the Adult Choir from 1998-2014. She served on the Pioneer Home Foundation Board and tri-chaired their campaign for the PioneerCare Center building project.
Preceding her in death were her parents. She is survived by her husband, Richard Gyllstrom; daughter, Marilyn Elizabeth (Beth) Gyllstrom (Daniel Anderson); grandchildren Benjamin Daniel, Nicholas William and Cecelia Johana Anderson; sister, Marilyn Saure (Thomas) Breckenridge; nephew John Samuel (Lee Ann Jackson) Breckenridge; niece Mabeth Sarah Breckenridge (David) Schwietz; niece Mary Breckenridge (David) Quello; great-nephews Samuel and Christopher Breckenridge, Breck and Jacob Schwietz, Thomas and John Quello; sisters-in-law Teresa Gyllstrom, Dorphine Gyllstrom and Evelyn Gyllstrom; and several Gyllstrom nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be given to the Mabeth Saure Gyllstrom Voice Scholarship at St. Cloud State University, the Mabeth Saure Gyllstrom Music Scholarship at Augsburg College or the choice of the donor.
