Marcia Stone Lindsay Ahlborg passed away peacefully while asleep on December 18, 2024. She was 92. She was preceded in death by her husband, William (Bill) Ahlborg; her parents, George and Natalie Lindsay; and her sister, Jean Farley. She's survived by her four children, Jean, Lindsay (Leslie), Melissa Uppgren (John) and Wendy; and five grandchildren - Lindsay and Leslie's two daughters, Amelia and Lily (David), and Melissa and John's three sons, John (Samantha), Turner, and George.
Born in Dighton, MA, Marcia attended the Emma Willard School ('50) and Wellesley College ('54). She lived in Boston briefly before moving to Rhode Island and marrying Bill. The next decade was both tragic and challenging for Marcia, as she lost her husband after he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage, as well as both of her parents. Faced with raising her four children as a single mom (the youngest was born 2 months after Bill passed) she went back to school, earning a master's degree in teaching, and embraced a career that paired nicely with the schedules of her kids. For several years, she taught US and World History at nearby Cranston High School.
In the early 80's she accepted an opportunity to teach at a Community College in Manchester, Vermont. She soon moved from the classroom into administration and eventually retired after serving the school as its director. An avid reader, she later worked at the town's thriving independent bookstore and eventually settled into an easy routine of gardening and tennis in the summer, and skiing and chopping her own wood (!!!) in the winter. She was passionate about social justice, energy conservation and organic gardening. It was not lost on anyone who knew her where she stood on political candidates and the strength of their progressive ideologies. She had no patience for prejudice, or policies that didn't protect the vulnerable. She was truly at home in Vermont!
Eventually, the family house became too much, and she grudgingly agreed to "come off the hill" for winters. By the fall of 2018 she was living full time nearer to family in Minnesota. In 2020 she settled into memory care Boutwells Landing. As the saying goes, it takes a village, and these last years for our dear mom and Grammy were made better by the caring and patient staff, the close proximity of family and especially the unwavering attention from her daughter Jean. For all that, we're very grateful.
RIP mom! Give 'em hell in heaven Grammy!
