Marcie Carol Latterell

Marcie Carol Latterell of Stillwater, passed away Sunday, May 5th after a brief battle with cancer. She left the physical world peacefully, surrounded by her children who made sure she knew how much she was loved as she moved on to the next life.

Marcie was born and raised in Duluth. After her marriage to Richard Powell, they moved to Stillwater to start a family. Marcie adored Stillwater, and it quickly grew to be her home. She loved its downtown, the river, and especially the big old houses on the South Hill.

Throughout her life, Marcie had a strong drive to help others. This desire to serve led to her first career caring for others as a nurse. Later in life, she actively dedicated her time to her church, St. Michael’s, as well as many charitable organizations. A few instances of note are that she lived her pro-life beliefs by housing and supporting pregnant teens who were unable to stay with their own families. She sponsored two refugee families from Vietnam, helping them settle into their new life in Minnesota and becoming friends along the way. During the AIDS crisis she volunteered at the Hope House in Stillwater in service to the ill. Helping others was an important part of who she was.

Marcie, along with her former husband and two other couples, ran a sporting goods store for a number of years. She also worked for a time as a real estate agent. However, her most important life’s work by far was being a mother. Marcie raised six children with a fierce devotion and sense of pride that was unmatched. She raised her kids to have integrity, to think of others, and to always do their best. Marcie certainly made it known how wonderful she thought her kids and grandkids were and how proud of their accomplishments she was. She really was born to be a mom.

Marcie enjoyed the companionship of a large group of friends. Of course there was the luncheon group, the wonderful women who shared their lives as they gathered monthly for lunch in each others’ homes. There were neighborhood friends, church friends, childhood friends, clinic friends…she really loved and treasured all of those who walked through life alongside her.

For many years in the later part of her life, Marcie struggled with mental illness. This ongoing battle shaped many aspects of her life, but it did not change her love for her family or who she was at the core of her soul. This illness was often difficult for those close to her in the last few decades, and we hope that you will remember her laugh, her wit and humor, her generosity, and her loving heart.

Marcie is preceded in death by her beloved parents Kenneth and Kimberley Latterell (Harvey) and her brother Michael Latterell. She is survived by her children: Jessie (Mike) Fredricksen, Jake (Anya) Powell, Jennette (Andy) Flynn, Mona Powell, Lauren (Kapil Melkote) Powell, Lindsay (Max) Fadeyev; her 10 grandchildren: Lily Fredricksen, Audrey Fredricksen, Eli Fredricksen, Norah Powell, Stella Powell, Jonah Flynn, Erimae Flynn, Isla Arhelger, Rosie Fadeyev, and Mila Fadeyev; her siblings Linda Bruen, Larry Latterell, Kathy Dolan, Ken Latterell, Kim Latterell, as well as many in-laws, nieces, and nephews.

Catholic services will be held at St. Michael’s church in Stillwater on May 14th, with a visitation at 11 a.m. and Mass at 12 p.m. Lunch reception to follow. A private family burial will be held in Duluth as she is laid to rest with her parents and her brother.
