Margaret King Cavanaugh, 78, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, passed away on Wednesday, October 1. Known since childhood as "Marjo," she was a devoted sister, wife, mother and grandmother. The oldest of eight children, Marjo was preceded in death by parents, John and Dorothy King, and brother, Michael. Marjo is survived by Bill, her husband of 54 years; son, John (Sarah Colson) Cavanaugh, of Oberlin, Ohio; daughters, Mary (Mike) Thompson of Dublin, Ohio, Peg (Paul Klitzke) Cavanaugh of Roseville, Minnesota; and seven grandchildren. Surviving siblings are John (Janie) King of Northville, Michigan; Mary Ellen (Tom) Miller of White Plains, Maryland; Judy (Gary Mion) Castle of Mansfield, Ohio; Mimi King of Columbus, Ohio; George (Jackie) King of Vero Beach, Florida; and Angela Johannessen of Lake Oswego, Oregon.
Marjo grew up in Mansfield, Ohio, and earned her bachelor's degree, with honors, from Carnegie Mellon University. Before she married, Marjo worked for a short time as a high school history teacher in Pittsburgh. She spent most of her adult life in Greencastle, Indiana, where she reared her children, supported her husband's work and, thanks to a lifelong love of books, discovered her professional calling as a librarian. Marjo earned a Master of Library Science degree from Indiana University and went on to serve as reference librarian at the Putnam County Public Library for 25 years.
Marjo enjoyed cooking and entertaining, and local history. She was an enthusiastic friend of the arts, and she found joy in music. Marjo loved to travel, garden, and support her grandchildren in their interests and endeavors. She kept abreast of the issues of the day, especially those affecting social justice and human rights. For many years Marjo served as an Oblate of Saint Benedict and was affiliated with the Our Lady of Grace Benedictine community in Indianapolis, Indiana.
