Melba M. (nee Buckanaga, born March 26, 1922. World War II Navy Veteran. Melba was the first American Indian Ojibwe woman from the White Earl Reservation to sign up and serve her country. She devotedly served her church, Holy Rosary Catholic church, for numerous decades, up to a month ago. Melba passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home surrounded by her family. Preceded in death by her parents, Jane and John Buckanga, Sr.; granddaughters, Deanette and Gabrielle; brothers, Charles and Jerome. Survived by husband of 57 years, Clayton; son, Michael; daughters, Nell (Lupe), Sue (Kevin); grandchildren, Clayton (Marites), Nichele, Billy (Alicia), Zachary (Amanda), Joel, Sarah, Ashilee, Tashi, Cassi, Lucas and Ahney; great-grandchildren, Cayla, Demeco, Caitlyn; brothers, Curtis (Gertrude) Buckanga, John (Donna) Buckanaga, Melvin (Bernice) Buckanaga; special godson, Ronald Buckanago; many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends; also her devoted furry companion of 15 years, Pinky. Mass of Christian Burial Wed 10 AM at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 2424 18th Ave S. Interment Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Visitation Tues (TODAY) from 4-8 PM at Bradshaw (McDivitt-Hauge), 3131 Minnesota Ave S and 1 hour prior to Mass as church. In lieu of flowers, Melba requests all memorials be given to Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
