Nancy Ruth (Johnsen) Martin

Nancy Ruth (Johnsen) Martin, age 81 passed away peacefully September 15, 2024. She was born in 1942 in Tyler, MN to Oliver (Ole) and Ruby. Growing up in such a small community and working at her father's hardware store in neighboring Arco remained at her core throughout her life. She often celebrated having a connection to her family's history in the open plains of Southern MN, while in amazement that she moved directly to NYC after her college graduation. Her interest in genealogy was a steadfast reflection of that connection to history and paths taken. Family and friends thoroughly enjoy her detailed books that focused on the individuals, showcasing their personalities and unique stories.

Nancy earned a BA from Gustavus Adolphus College, majoring in Math and Education where she made many valued lifelong friends. Continuing, she earned a master’s in education from the University of Southern Maine and nearly finished her PhD from the University of Minnesota.

In her mid-twenties, she moved to Long Island, NY to begin her teaching career and met her husband, Glenn. They started a family together and soon moved to Maine. She spent her entire career in education - as an elementary school teacher, principal and district administrator in NY, ME and MN. She was also very active in her faith at Redeemer Lutheran Church in White Bear Lake, MN where she donated her time as president of the congregation.

She was fiercely independent, a strong leader and had a sense for adventure. Following college, she had a memorable trip through Europe. Later, she explored Thailand and at 70, traveled to Denmark to connect to her heritage. And, in the summer months she would take her children on cross country rides connecting with friends and family, always spending time in the Maine woods where they could remain connected to their father’s memory. She continued to spend time there every summer as it was her 'very special retreat'.

Her family was immensely important to her. She was filled with love and pride for their every accomplishment and experience. Nancy is survived by her son, Eric, her daughter, Lisa and her grandchildren Ian, Griffin and Kira. She is preceded in death by her parents Ole and Ruby, her husband, Glenn and son-in-law, Paul.

An intimate gathering to celebrate Nancy's life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, please consider directing memorial donations towards the Alzheimer's Association of Minnesota or PSC Partners Seeking a Cure.
