Dear son, brother, cousin, uncle, and friend Nicholas Andro Toso passed away on 2/6/2021 at the age of 33.
Nick valued loyalty and was fiercely loyal himself. He would do anything for those he considered family, blood or chosen. For this reason, many counted on him in times of celebration, times of trouble, or even in mundane moments. He took care of his own. He would give you his bed, pick you up or drive you home – no matter the hour, no questions asked. He would make sure you laughed. He sometimes made you cringe, which would make him laugh. ”What did the old grape say when it got stepped on? Nothing; it just let out a little wine.” See? Cringy. His smile would light-up-the-world. Indeed, no matter the cynicism he joked with, he was radiant and joyful.
His joy and radiance shone through in his love for hosting. He spoiled his guests with an elaborate spread of homemade appetizers, drinks, the main course, sides, and options of sauces. A chemist in the lab and in the kitchen. His dedication to others was shown in the details. He always had ice cream and a bowl of chocolates on hand even though he didn’t like desserts, except the occasional Mochi ball or Pocky sticks. He spent the week before a family reunion prepping food, hard lemonades, nitro coffee, and hot sauces to share. At a party, he would bartend, and everyone knew him by the end of the night.
He knew his people and was thoughtful. He always brought something tailored to the occasion. Even in a casual visit, he might arrive with homemade hand sanitizer, a cordless mouse, a bottle of wine, or an extra burrito.
His mind was as sharp as his kitchen knives. He would explain the science or mechanics of how things worked and probably correct your grammar. He turned his ideas into reality, like his portable nitro coffee. He fixed things for you, and if he didn’t know how to, he would research it (the only kind of reading he liked) and catch on fast.
We will remember him, whether as Nicky, Nick, Nicholas, or Toso. We will remember him in a suit or with his fedora, wearing the cross of Jerusalem from his Grandma Yona. We will miss his presence, his hug hello, his dimpled smile, and all the ways he made us feel seen and loved. We know he will live on in how we show up for one another and in the countless things that will remind us of our dear Nicholas.
Survived by his father, Benjamin; mother, Allison; brother Matthew (Talisha); niece Natalie; and nephew Gabriel.
