Formerly of Lincoln, Nebraska. Orvin was born on June 9th, 1932 in Hawley, MN where he was raised on a dairy farm. He served as an Army Officer in U.S. Military Intelligence during the Korean War, and achieved rank of 1st Lieutenant in the Central Intelligence Corps. Orvin was a professor and researcher in weed science at UNL for 26 years, until he returned to MN as the UMN Department Head of Agronomy & Plant Genetics. Orvin has produced over 400 separate publications and a profusion of course syllabi, extension bulletins and patents. His awards are numerous. He served as President of the Weed Science Society of America, and North Central Weed Science Society. He enjoyed church work, hunting, fishing, golfing, and spending time with family. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Delores Burnside; parents, John J. Burnside and Sena (Dwyer) Burnside; brothers, Frank, Russel Sr., Clarence, Lloyd and Francis Burnside; sisters, Doris Hendrickson, Alice Hoaglin, and Mable Cozine. Orvin is survived by his wife, Clarice and children Bruce (Sandy), Kristi (Michael) Shoemaker, Nick (Jo Ann) Rude, Tim Rude, and Brenda Jonason, and his sister, Marjorie Olson. Memorial Service Thursday, June 1st, 3:00 P.M. with visitation one hour prior, all at Messiah Lutheran Church, 2848 County Road H2, Mounds View MN 55112. A second Memorial Service will be held in his hometown of Hawley on Friday, June 2nd, 1:00 P.M. with visitation one hour prior, all at Hawley Lutheran Church, 510 8th St, Hawley, MN 56549. Burial in Vergas, MN. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be given to wildlife preservation efforts near his hometown of Hawley, MN.
