After a great day and one last glass of scotch, Peggy Alta “Peg” Heslop left us suddenly to join the Great Cloud of Witnesses on the night of November 8th, 2020. She was a giant amongst women and deeply loved by those who knew her. She was a voracious reader, a staunch humanitarian, a fierce dog lover, a wise parent, a mischievous debater, and a witty travel companion.
Born in Idaho Falls, Idaho in 1940 as the youngest of four daughters, Peg graduated from Idaho Falls High School before moving onto Idaho State University at Pocatello to pursue a degree in education. Shortly after, she was hired over the phone by North Saint Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale Schools as an elementary school teacher and began her teaching career. She returned to Pocatello to complete her first master’s degree, which enabled her to transition to special education teaching. She received her second master’s degree from Saint Mary’s University at Minneapolis in counseling psychology, and returned to teaching, this time teaching sixth grade. She spent her entire teaching career in North Saint Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale schools and retired in June of 1996.
In the Fall of 1980, Elaine Johnson was hired by the school district to begin a chemical health program. Peg was at the time facilitating chemical health groups for the district and it was through this hiring that Elaine and Peg met, beginning a decades long friendship. Upon Peg’s retirement, and with the desire of both to relocate, the two built a house in Roseville, Minnesota, which then became the childhood home of Elizabeth (Liza), in 2000, and Denis, in 2002. Parenting wasn’t in Peg’s initial retirement plan, but she flourished in the role and together with Elaine raised two wonderful, if a little too sarcastic, children.
Known as “Pepe” to her godchildren, she passed on her humor and argumentation skills with the vigor only she could provide. She will be deeply missed and her memory deeply cherished by all who loved her, including: sisters, Colleen Canavan of NJ and Bobbie Brewer of ID, friend and companion Elaine Johnson, godchildren Elizabeth and Denis Johnson, and numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Dorothy Heslop, sister Patricia Rees, two nieces, and a nephew. A private family memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, April 17. Guests are invited to watch a livestream broadcast of the service (link provided at the bottom of this page). Memorials preferred to the American Lung Association.
