Reid Sumner Johnson

Reid Sumner Johnson, 72, passed away November 8th, 2024 surrounded by his loving family after facing cancer with courage and purpose.

Born on March 28, 1952 to Sumner and Joan Johnson, Reid grew up in Chisago City where he met and later married his high school sweetheart, Carol. Together, they graduated from the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Reid’s professional career spanned many years in courier logistics throughout the Twin Cities, where he was known for his tenacious work ethic and steadfast commitment to his clients.

In retirement, Reid found joy in the simple pleasures of life, including cheering for his beloved Minnesota sports teams and, above all, supporting his grandchildren. He was a regular presence at their sports games, dance performances and activities, always eager to cheer them on with pride. His grandchildren adored him and his enthusiastic presence on the sidelines lifted their spirits. He also supported Carol with a focused determination throughout her battle with pancreatic cancer.

Reid could often be found outside tinkering on a project, splitting wood, or caring for his quiet, peaceful slice of the world in Hugo. It was here where he raised his children and later found joy in watching his 10 grandchildren play and grow. He shared countless special moments with them, whether giving rides on the four-wheeler or teaching them the art of picking sticks or rocks. A master of the grill and griddle, Reid was known for his legendary Swedish pancakes and famous ribs, often preparing meals for the whole crew.

Reid is survived by his children, Ben (Justine) Johnson, Sara (Lancer) Lumby, Krista (Nathan) Gossai; his grandchildren, Maxwell, Lillianna and Piper Johnson, Cohen, Cavan and Calla Lumby, and Annika, Maren, Clara and Brita Gossai; his mother, Joan Johnson; his siblings, Rori, Rona (Joe Tessling) and Roxi Johnson, sister-in-law Sandy (Dan) Moody, brother-in-law Tom (Holly) Schmidt, and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Sumner, and wife, Carol.
