Jackson, Reverend James W., a Catholic priest of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, passed away from complications resulting from abdominal surgery at Our Lady of Good Counsel Hospice in St. Paul, MN.
Father Jackson was born January 5th, 1933 in Wellsburg, WVA, the eldest son of Ralph Edward Jackson and Anne T. Jackson. He was raised in Wheeling, WVA and graduated from St. Michael's parochial school there before beginning his studies for the priesthood at the Seminary of the Society of Mary in Philadelphia, PA. He received a bachelor's degree in philosophy and a graduate degree in theology in Washington, D.C. before being ordained there February 6th, 1960 at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.
He began his 43 years of priestly ministry as a member of the Society of Mary by teaching high school at Chanel High School in Cleveland, OH. He then went on to become a member of that religious society's mission band preaching parish retreats in the Midwest United States.
He was a parish priest at Marist parishes in the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis while studying for and receiving a master's degree in chemical dependency from the University of Minnesota in 1975, graduating summa cum laude. He founded an innovative new outpatient chemical dependency unit at Ramsey Hospital in St. Paul, serving both as supervisor and chaplain to the unit, a position he held for 11 years.
He joined the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis as a Diocesan priest. In 1984 and after some parish assignments, went on to work as the Catholic chaplain in the Hennepin County Prison Chaplains' Corps for 16 years. In 1978 he became chaplain to the Hawthorne Dominican Sisters at Our Lady of Good Counsel Home in St. Paul, saying daily Mass and ministering to the needs of the patients there for 25 years.
He is preceded in death by his father, mother and sister, Mary Elizabeth. He is survived by his brother, Dr. Edward M. Jackson; his brother's wife, Rosemarie C. Jackson, of Sumner, WA; Shirley and Billy Jackson, Corrina and Jim Minger of Woodsfield, OH, Dorothy and Paul Jackson of Pickerington, OH, Beulah Johnson of Beallsville, OH, Irene Bolon, Kitty Ann and Kenneth G. Kahrig, Becky McGee and Kent McGee, all of Jerusalem, OH; three aunts, Mary Feist of Phoenix, AZ, Betty Blabac of Akron, OH and Wilma Bode of Springfield, OH; one uncle, Robert Brown of Gahanna, OH; and numerous cousins in both West Virginia and Ohio.
The Catholic Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Archbishop Harry J. Flynn on Thursday, October 16, 2003 at 10:30 AM at HOLY SPIRIT CATHOLIC CHURCH, 515 S. Albert St., St. Paul, where Father Jackson celebrated his 25th Anniversary of Priesthood in 1985. Visitation Wednesday, October 15, 2003 from 5-8 PM at BRADSHAW, 678 Snelling Ave S at Eleanor.
He will be laid to rest at the Jackson family plot at the Oaklawn Cemetery in Woodsfield, OH, next to his uncle, Virgil Jackson, who was Godfather at his Baptism, and his paternal grandparents, Benjamin Stonewall Jackson and Louisa Philips Jackson. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to Our Lady of Good Counsel Home, 2076 St. Anthony Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55104, to help continue the work of the hospice where he died.
