Reverend Johnson

d. March 14, 2017

Reverend Richard W. "Dick" Johnson of St. Paul passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday March 14. Survived by wife, Debra; daughter, Elissa (Ron); brother, Kenny (Donna); and loving family and friends. Preceded in death by parents; son, Jay; brothers, Roy and Bill; and sister, Esther.

Pastor Rich Johnson died peacefully at home on Tuesday, March 14 with his wife, Debra, and daughter Elissa by his side. Rich was diagnosed with ALS in July 2016. The disease was aggressive but didn't dampen his faith or spirit or prevent him from welcoming visitors up to the day he died. His final act of ministry was to donate his body to the University of Minnesota for education, and his brain to Harvard for ALS research. He was ordained by the American Baptist Church, served many congregations and faithfully and joyfully served the United Methodist churches these last years.

Pastor Rich loved humor and games. He was a regular, and competitive bridge player. He also loved handball, volleyball and tennis in years past. Biblical scholarship was an avid interest so he read and studied diligently. He read the Greek New Testament and a different translation of the Bible through each year. He also loved teaching Christian education and jumped at every opportunity to preach and share his knowledge. He was committed to presenting the Bible in a clear and understandable manner, which included original meaning and historical context. He always gave assistance in a non-judgmental affirming manner.

We will miss Rich's smile, which could light up a room. We will miss his sense of humor and hearty laugh. We will miss his gift for storytelling and his eloquent, challenging sermons. We will miss his deeply spiritual prayers. All of those with whom he came in contact spoke of one whose faith was an inspiration to them. He was to so many, the manifestation of the love of God and the grace of Jesus Christ.

The Service of Death and Resurrection and celebration of his life will be held at Fairmount Avenue United Methodist Church, 1523 Fairmount Avenue, St. Paul, on Saturday, April 1. The family requests memorials to ALS research in the name of Richard W. Johnson. You can mail your donation to ALS Association, Attn: Research donation, 333 Washington Ave. N., Suite 105, Minneapolis, MN 55401 or bring them to the service.
