Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather and Friend. Passed away peacefully at home in Boutwells Landing, Oak Park Heights, on Wednesday, May 14, 2014.
Preceded in death by wife, Mary J.; parents, Robert D. and Josephine M.; brother, John, and sisters, Josephine Lupient and Anne Woods; special friend, Shirley Peltier. Survived by daughter, Mary J. Safar of Orono, and son, Robert D. III (Pam) of Woodbury; grandchildren, Jack Safar, Catherine Sugasa (Dustin), Matthew (Candace), and Laura; great-grandchildren, Murray, Ryan, Dylan, and Peyton; brother, Dan; and many wonderful friends.
Bob graduated from Stillwater High School in 1936 and St. Thomas College in 1940 with a B.S in Chemistry. He attended Poly Technical Institute of Brooklyn, receiving a M.S. in Chemistry in 1942. During WWII, he supported the war effort by working for US Rubber Co. in Connecticut. He moved to Stillwater in 1945 to work at 3M until retiring in 1978. He spent these years working in tape products, notably Magic Tape. He was elected to The Carlton Society, a group of 3M scientists recognized by their peers for significant technical contributions. Bob spent part of his retirement planting thousands of different varieties of pine trees on the banks of the St. Croix River and feeding the birds.
Mass of Christian Burial Monday, 11:00 A.M. at the CHURCH OF ST. MICHAEL, 611 3rd St. S., Stillwater. Visitation 9:30-11:00 A.M. prior to the Mass. Private family interment at Fairview Cemetery. Memorials preferred to Church of St. Michael and the University of Minnesota Lillehei Heart Institute.
