Roger B. Shepard, Jr.
92, of St. Paul. Lived for sport, friends and family. Survived by his wife, Mary; daughter, Kay Morris Shepard; sons, Lansing, Roger and Tom. Survived also by his sister, Constance Otisl brother, Stanley. Preceded in death by his brother, Blake; mother and father, Katherine and Roger. Roger leaves behind six grandchildren; a great-grandchild; eight nephews and nieces; and many, many friends. A graduate of St. Paul Academy and Yale University, Roger served as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a passionate lover of sports. In college he excelled in hockey, football and baseball. In later life he pursued tennis, squash, handball and golf, and was an active downhill skier into his 90's. In business, he was an executive vice president of the St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Co. and was an active member of a number of service organizations. Among many other activities, he was a leader of the Greater St. Paul YMCA for over 40 years and served as board chair for several years. He was a founder of the Heritage Club, the St. Paul Y's deferred giving program. Roger was one of the first to serve in the Twin Cities Management Assistance Program, Retired Executives Service Corps matching volunteer retired managers with nonprofits which needed ther professional expertise. In that capacity he worked closely with the College of St. Catherine to place women in management positions. Roger will be mightily missed. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the St. Paul YMCA or to St. Paul Academy-Summit School. A private service is planned for immediate family members.
