Ruth Otillia Beardsley

10/31/1911 to 10/8/2011

Ruth was born on a homestead wheat farm in Dupree So Dakota, and at age two moved with her family to a dairy farm in Sarona Wisconsin.

Ruth (aka Bill ) attended a one room school in Sarona, Wis., graduating as Salutatorian from Shell Lake HS in 1929, Though being honored with a full scholarship to the University of Minnesota she had to decline the award and give up her dream of becoming a nurse to help financially support her younger siblings' education and help manage the family farm during the Depression.

in 1937 Ruth married architect Wendell Beardsley in Spooner Wisconsin and they moved to Stillwater. They built their first home and raised four children: Wendell, Meredith, Kevin, and Melissa. Ruth and Wendell also enjoyed sharing their home with their AFS son, Juan Marcet, who came from Argentina in 1964-65 to attend Stillwater HS. Juan has returned many times to visit his "mom", most recently this past July

She was an extraordinary homemaker, delightful hostess, cook, baker, and seamstress. She also enjoyed entertaining family and friends, and square dancing with Wendell. Thousands of stitches went into the many hand stitched quilts she created for each of her children and grandchildren: Kris, Sean, Sarah, Jenna, Megan, Erin and great-grandchildren: Kendall, Ethan, Cameron, and Jacob.

She served her community in many ways including countless hours as a member of the Girl Scout Council of St Croix Valley, the Washington County Historical Society, First United Methodist Church, and was a founding member of the Stillwater Perennial Garden Club. She loved to travel and cultivated many life long friendships.

Her greatest joy was from the many visits with family to the Olson Cabin near Hayward Wisconsin that she helped her parents build in 1940. In her later years Ruth was seen almost daily walking Stillwater's hilly streets to the library, church, grocery and visiting friends. At the age of 93 she was the oldest participant of the Danskin Triathlon in Seattle. She continued to winter in Arizona until she was 98 years old when a broken leg forced her to give up her home and move into the Gables at Boutwell's Landing.

Her friends and family will gather to honor her at the Chapel at Boutwell's Landing at 10:00 AM Friday, October 14. We suggest for memorials the following organizations that were dear to her: Girl Scout Council of St. Croix Valley, Washington County Historical Society, and the First United Methodist Church of Stillwater.
