We say goodbye to an extraordinary woman, who lived her life in the service of others. Diligent and loving, Betty brought joy to her adoptive family, Skipper and Jerry Slawik, Mary Slawik Tichenor, and their children, in turn.
Betty took care of us and made us all feel loved when we were in her care. She provided unfailing love and support to a family in need during the darkest days and nights of loss, when Skipper was killed at age 12. She sacrificed a life of her own to be a constant presence for all of us. She was our confidant as children, our special friend, our secret keeper. We will miss her.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Mabel Newell, brothers David and Edward Newell, close friends and long time employers Harold and Marie Slawik, for whom she provided loving, caring, faithful service for over 50 years.
Special thanks to Jack and Lil Larson for their loving care of Betty, and to the caring staff of the Episcopal Church Home in St. Paul, where Betty spent her last years.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wed., Jan. 24, in the Coventry Chapel of Episcopal Church Home, 1849 University Ave., St. Paul., with a visitation 30 minutes prior. Memorials preferred, Episcopal Homes Foundation, 490 E. Lynnhurst Ave., St. Paul, MN 55104. Private interment, Resurrection Cemetery, Mendota Heights.
