Scott Thomas Henderson, age 78, passed away peacefully at home on February 11, 2025, due to complications of radiation treatment for throat cancer.
Scott was born on May 1, 1946, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He grew up in Wauwatosa and graduated from Wauwatosa West High School in 1964. He then attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and majored in Business. Scott was a member of two fraternities, the ZOTS and Sigma Alpha Epsilon, in which he forged lifelong friendships. Scott married his high-school sweetheart, Joan Dallman, on August 26, 1967. After receiving his B.A. in 1969, Scott was employed as an accountant at Ohio Medical Products in Madison. Scott and Joan's two children, Matthew and Sara, were born in the early 1970s.
Scott and his family moved to MN in the fall of 1977, when Scott began a long career with 3M Company, or Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing as it was then known. Scott's responsibilities varied and included work in acquisitions, strategic planning and financial accounting; he was a Director and served as VP of Finance and IT for 3M Canada. Scott made many friends at 3M, and continued to see a number of them after his retirement in 2006.
Scott had a lifelong passion for music of all types. His initial love of rock 'n roll and R&B led to a deep appreciation of jazz and blues, and he collected LPs and CDs throughout his life. His greatest joy was attending live music concerts with Joan, and he saw artists ranging from the Grateful Dead to Sonny Rollins and Dexter Gordon. Scott and Joan also enjoyed the local Twin Cities music scene and dancing to Willie & the Bees. Among Scott's greatest joys were attending son Matthew's graduation from the Berklee College of Music in 1996 where Pat Metheny gave the commencement address, and watching Matthew perform live as often as he could.
After retirement, Scott and Joan enjoyed the condominium experience in Madison, then the snowbird experience after purchasing a second home in Tucson, and finally the peace of settling back in Minnesota in 2014, in their home in North Oaks. They also travelled to the far western and eastern provinces of Canada, Europe, Mexico, Costa Rica, Maui, Peru, Ireland, England, and Scotland, home of the Henderson clan; Joan typically set the agenda, but Scott enjoyed the traveling too. Their favorite vacation spots remained the North Shore of Lake Superior and the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
Scott is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joan; son Matthew, daughter-in-law, Mindy; grandsons, Tanner, Riley and Miles, all of Long Beach, CA; granddaughter, Jade Rhodes and grandson, Isaiah Block, both of St. Paul, MN; four great-grandchildren; brother, John and wife, Boe of Tennessee; brother, Bruce of Milwaukee, WI; brother, Stuart and wife, Lynn of Tennessee; goddaughter, Jamie Miskinis of California; a number of nieces and nephews; and many friends. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and bompa. Scott was preceded in death by his parents, John R. Henderson and Shirley May (nee Smith) Henderson; daughter, Sara Henderson; and brother, Brian Henderson.
We are grateful to the Allina hospice team and the in-home hospice team of Joan, son Matthew, brother John, and his faithful Hopi, the dog who walked with Scott every day. We also extend a special thank you to neighbor Leland Eliason, for providing spiritual guidance and support, and to the many friends who were able to visit and spend time with Scott during his last days; we appreciate your kindness and generosity.
A memorial service will be held on August 23, 2025, at Bradshaw Funeral Home, 4600 Greenhaven Drive, White Bear, MN; time to be posted here closer to the date.
Memorials preferred to Allina Health Foundation-Hospice (see allinahealth.org/give), or Allina Health Foundation-Hospice, 2925 Chicago Ave., Mail Route 10721, Minneapolis, MN 55407.
Scott exemplified the Henderson clan motto "Virtue alone ennobles." He lived his Scottish heritage and stood tall and strong for so many to the end of his life, and showed kindness to all. We love you Scott.
