Trossen, Shirley A.
Age 83, Passed away peacefully on June 14 at home. Preceded in death by husband Duane and brother Richard Schneider. She is survived by sons James (Becky), Michael (partner Jeff Zollman) and daughter Julia (James) Koski, along with grandchildren Alycia (fiancAC. Rahul Kapur) Trossen, Emily (Nathan) Johnson, Elizabeth Trossen, Daniel Koski, great granddaughter Norah and loving companion Jack Von Bokern. Shirley was born and raised in Rush City MN, and attended the college of St Catherine before marrying Duane Trossen in 1953. Like many at that time, Shirley worked to support the family while Duane earned his degree under the GI Bill. Once he was on his way in his career, it was her turn to continue her education. In 1967, Shirley earned her bachelor degree in education and in 1971 her masters in reading at the University of Wisconsin River Falls. A passionate advocate for children, Shirley spent her entire career in the White Bear Lake school district as an elementary teacher, reading specialist, early childhood director and finally, an elementary principal. As and educational leader, Shirley touched many lives and brought practical, real world advice and experience to both students and staff. After her retirement from the school district, she continued championing children as a Guardian Ad Litem for Washington County; retiring from this role in 2014. Her later years were spent years traveling, learning, and wintering in Hawaii with Jack, but was she was happiest at her cabin on Little Pine Lake in Perham, surrounded by family and friends, managing the ensuing chaos. When diagnosed with a return of pancreatic cancer in early 2016, Shirley was determined to manage her journey her way, and with the help of many, was able to spend the last part of her life at home with her family. Special thanks to HealthPartners Hospice and Visiting Angels Living Assistance Services. A visitation will be held Sunday, June 19th from 5-8 PM at BRADSHAW CELEBRATION OF LIFE CENTER, 4600 Greenhaven Dr., White Bear at Hwy 96 (one mile west of 35E).
