William John Kamrud was born on July 19, 1951 in Minneapolis to Oliver "Kam" and Trudy Kamrud. He grew up in Southeast Minneapolis and attended Marshall High School. In school, he was involved in the Photography Club and played saxophone in the band. Upon graduating in 1969, he attended the U of M. After two years, he left to attend Dunwoody Institute to study Automobile Mechanics to pursue his love of racing. In his 20s, he rebuilt a 1967 Camaro and worked at the Post Office in Minneapolis. He sold his Camaro in the early '80s to buy a Formula Ford race car and enjoyed racing it on local tracks. He and his friends shared many good memories at Road America Raceway in Elkhart Lake, WI.
William was introduced to Mary Eich by his friend (and her older brother) Larry, and were married on May 6, 1978. He took a job with American Motors soon after their wedding, and worked as a District Service Manager for the next 30 years (American Motors eventually becoming Chrysler Corporation). 1982, 1984, and 1987 saw the births of William and Mary's three children, Allison, Jonathan, and Alexander. William was a strong and supportive husband during the time of Mary's stroke in 1987.
He retired from Daimler Chrysler in 2007 and worked off and on doing part-time jobs in the years following his retirement. He also spent time volunteering with a model railroad club, and enjoyed taking train trips and visiting the North Shore with Mary. William passed away peacefully on June 14, 2018 surrounded by family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver and Trudy. William is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Mary; children, Allison (Mitch) Hewitt, Jonathan (Shelcy), Alexander (Angela); brother, Doug; and was a loving PopPop to his grandchildren Ty Oliver and Roya Elizabeth. His ultimate joy was his family. He is now at peace with his Lord and Savior.
