William Emil Lundquist was born in Kandiyohi, Minnesota, on October 9, 1912.He died peacefully in his sleep early on the morning of Wednesday, January 5,2005, after a brief battle with cancer. He graduated from high school in Stanley, North Dakota, in 1930. Bill attended the University of Minnesota. He graduated in 1934 with a degree in chemical engineering and then went to the University of Illinois for graduate work. He earned his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering in 1938 and went to work for DuPont in Wilmington, Delaware. He started at 3M in 1942 and continued in his career at 3M until he retired in 1977. He received 3M?s Carlton Award in 1964, the second year it was in existence. He is most remembered by those he hired and how he mentored them. Bill married Jeanne Moorhead on June 26, 1948. In 1953, the family moved to their home in Lake Elmo. As there was no 4H club with enough room for their children, Bill and Jeanne worked to start a 4H club and became leaders from 1958 to 1978. They were active members of Stillwater First United Methodist Church. Bill also served on the East Oakdale town board, the Washington County planning commission and the Lake Elmo planning commission. He was very active with the St. Croix Area United Way. Bill loved music, and learned to play the piano when he was young. Later, he also learned the organ and built a theater organ in his basement after his retirement. He was active with the Land O Lakes Theater Organ Society. Bill will be remembered most recently as ?Mr. Wizard?. Since starting as a volunteer with the 3M Visiting Wizard program in 1991, he visited about 1500 classes in the Stillwater Elementary schools and 200 classes in schools outside the Stillwater district. A few of the awards he received for this volunteer work include the Senior Citizen of the Year and the Spurgeon Award. He was also recognized by KARE 11?s ?Eleven Who Care? award program, and was twice a WCCO ?Good Neighbor?.

Bill is survived by his children; Vicky Harris (Gerald) of Silver Lake, Kris Lundquist of Lake Elmo, George Lundquist of St. Paul, Betsy Lundquist of Hillman, Martha Healy (Tim) of Hillman, Joey Lundquist of Oakdale, and Susy Lundquist of White Bear Lake, four grandchildren; Marissa Brown, Holly and Carrie Harris, and Kyler Lundquist; one sister-in-law, Jean Moorhead and a brother-in-law, Warren Herd, numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Jeanne; his brothers, Rudy, Paul, Ted and Ben; his sisters Ebba, Millie, and Dorothy; and a grandson, Charlie.

There will be a Memorial Service held to celebrate Bill?s life, 7:00 PM, Thursday January 13th at the FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, corner of Greeley and Myrtle Street, Stillwater, with a time of gathering beginning at 5:30 PM.
