Winifred Mcafee

Winifred (Wynn, Sis) Mershon Mathis McAfee went home to the Lord on December 21, 2018. She was 94. Wynn loved the Lord, her family, music, helping others, gardening, playing Scrabble, telling stories, and making friends of everyone she encountered, offering warm hugs and Peppermint Patties.

She was born in 1924 in Des Moines, Iowa to Fred and Norma Mathis. She attended East High School where she met Willis Robert (Bob) McAfee, Jr. The two were engaged shortly before Bob went to serve in WWII. Wynn attended college at the University of Iowa, Drake University and Macalester College, eventually completing a degree in Music Education. After Bob returned from the war, they finished their studies and taught school in Kelliher, a small town in northern Minnesota. They moved to Stillwater in 1954 where Bob started teaching eighth grade earth science. Wynn was active in the Stillwater Presbyterian Church for many years, directing the children's choir with Diane Thompson. She and Diane also taught piano lessons together. She worked for many years in the Stillwater schools. Before retiring in 1986, Wynn worked as an aide in the high school library.

She is preceded in death by her parents; sister, Marilyn (Skippy) O'Mara; husband, Bob; brother-in-law, Raymond McAfee; and many friends. She is survived by her brother Rexford (Bud) Mathis; sister-in-law, Nancy Mathis, and sister-in-law, Betty McAfee; children: Rolfe (Nancy), Ross (Jane), and Barbara; grandchildren: Alexander, Janelle, Jill and Travis; great-grandchildren Amaris, Ryland, Madeline, Cadence, Lyric, and Kellan; many nieces and nephews; and special friends Warren Lorenz, Linda Saveland, Sarah Schaffer and Jenifer Pruden.

Celebration Service at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 30 at Bradshaw Celebration of Life Center, 2800 Curve Crest Blvd, Stillwater, MN 55082, with visitation one hour prior to the service.
